Iain Murray bravely broaches the subject of fiction writing. He does not doubt the legitimacy of it for the Christian as such – think of ‘Pilgrim’s Progress’ for instance. However he does look back to a turning point in the late Victorian era when some famous non-Christian authors stole away the hearts of the British public. Fiction became an amoral art-form. The historic idea of imagination being subservient to the delivery of a message consistent with a biblical interpretation of history, science, morality etc was virtually destroyed. Mere fiction became the ‘opium of the people’ not religion. And so it remains, only more consolidated via other media – films, gaming etc
